Dele Alli banned for Tottenham’s clash against Manchester United by FA
Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli will not be able to take the field against Manchester United when the Premier League returns later this month, after the FA handed him a one-match suspension for his controversial social media post earlier this year in which he appeared to mock an Asian man over the coronavirus.
The 24-year-old was also hit with a £50,000 fine and will also have to take an educational course, after an Independent Regulatory commission ruled that he was guilty of breach of FA Rule E3.
Alli posted a video showing a man of Asian descent with the caption: ‘Corona whatttttt, please listen with volume’. In the next part of the Snapchat story, the midfielder wore a mask while appearing to feign concern. (h/t Daily Mail)
He then showed a bottle of handwash, accompanied by the caption: ‘This virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me’. Alli took down the video soon after and had issued an apology as well. (h/t Daily Mail)
Nevertheless, the FA have deemed his actions punishable. Issuing a statement after the ruling, the Tottenham Hotspur star said:
“In response to the FA decision, I would like to apologise again for any offence caused by my actions on Feb. 6. It was an extremely poorly judged joke about a virus that has now affected us more than we could ever have imagined.”
