Hugo Lloris puzzled by Tottenham Hotspur’s slump after the success of last season
Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has admitted that it is difficult to explain how the club’s form has declined since the heights of the last season. (h/t Daily Mail)
The 2018/19 campaign was one of the best in the recent history of the club as we came within a whisker of winning the UEFA Champions League. In contrast, the 2019/20 season has been a rocky one, with a poor start to the term, leading to the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.
Things seemed to be improving upon the arrival of Jose Mourinho last November, but the results were on a decline once again prior to the suspension of the season. Reflecting on the campaign, Lloris said (h/t Daily Mail):
“Wow, it’s difficult to explain. There is sometimes one season when everything goes against you.”
Further elaborating on the possible reasons leading to the slump, Lloris added that the team got very little time to recover in between the two seasons, which has led to a series of injuries to a lot of our first-teamers. (h/t Daily Mail)
Indeed, Lloris himself spent close to three months out on the sidelines with an elbow issue, while star striker Harry Kane also missed a large chunk of the campaign.
“Last season, we went on an incredible run in the Champions League and we finished the season on our knees and you don’t have time to recover from one season before you have to start a new one. And then of course a lot of injured players.”
