Tottenham to end pursuit of Flamengo midfielder Gerson
According to a report from Esporte (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have decided to call off the pursuit of Gerson, after Flamengo put a £43m price tag on the Brazilian midfield star.
Gerson came through the youth ranks at Brazilian club Fluminense. He made the move to Europe in 2016, joining Serie A side AS Roma, but endured a difficult two-year stint at the club.
After a failed loan spell at Fiorentina, the 23-year-old returned to Brazil, joining Flamengo in 2019. Since returning to Brazil, the midfielder has rediscovered his mojo, having helped the club to a league title and the Copa Libertadores triumph in 2019.
Gerson’s links with a move to Tottenham have intensified of late. His father confirmed the club’s interest in an interview last month. (h/t Daily Mail)
It was even claimed that our chairman Daniel Levy had sanctioned £16m for Gerson. However, Flamengo have rejected the offer and instead have demanded that the club pay up £43m for the 23-year-old. (h/t Football.london)
This valuation of the Brazilian has seemingly dissuaded the club from going after the talented 23-year-old, as per the report.
It is no hidden secret that we are in a difficult position financially, owing to the coronavirus crisis. As a result, transfer funds will be scarce heading into the summer window.
And given the number of positions that need to strengthened, it would be quite imprudent of the club to spend £43m on a single player, that too, a player who has struggled in Europe in the past.
