Tottenham Hotspur prepare an offer for Flamengo midfielder Gerson
According to Goal (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are in touch with the agent of Flamengo star Gerson.
A central midfielder who is also capable of playing an attacking role, the 23-year-old played a crucial role as Flamengo won both the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Libertadores in 2019. They also made it to the World Club Cup final where they lost to Liverpool.
His performances have attracted the attention of Jose Mourinho. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is ready to splash the cash and has readied a £16million offer for the player.
The main obstacle in our path is a simple fact that Flamengo does not want to sell Gerson. The 23-year-old spent three seasons in Italy before the Brazilians signed him in a deal worth £10.5million. This made him the most expensive Brazilian player ever signed by a Brazilian club. (h/t Express)
According to the report, Gerson too is keen to stay put and work with Jorge Jesus. He is keen to improve and make the step up to the Brazil squad.
Tottenham’s interest is not new. The player’s father had earlier confirmed that the North Londoners were interested. (h/t Daily Mail)
Arch-rivals Arsenal too were in for the player, with the Gunners’ Head of Football Raul Sanllehi a keen admirer. Thankfully, Gerson went on to reject them.
Signing Gerson appears difficult given the factors against us. Spurs will still do well to push for him given his talent. An exceptional midfielder who keeps getting better, he could become a powerhouse of a player under the right guidance.

Gerson’s athleticism and versatility will add mobility to the Spurs midfield that has looked far too static at times. Tanguy Ndombele has failed to impress, while Moussa Sissoko is not getting any younger. Adding Gerson will certainly make our midfield more dynamic.
