Tottenham face competition from PSG in the race for Sergino Dest

According to a report from Voetbal International (h/t Football.london), Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race for the signing of Ajax defender Sergino Dest, who has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham’s links with Dest have been persisting since last summer with reports even claiming that we had a £17m bid rejected for him in the January transfer window. (h/t Football.london)

Last month, Calciomercato (h/t Football.london), claimed that the club was going to pursue the 19-year-old’s signing once again this summer. But now, our attempts to land the USMNT international are likely to be complicated following the entry of PSG in the picture. (h/t Football.london)

The French champions are eyeing the 19-year-old Dest as a replacement for Thomas Meunier, who is entering the final year of his contract and, interestingly, has been heavily linked with Tottenham.

Having sold Kieran Trippier last summer, Tottenham were left with just Serge Aurier as the senior right-back in the squad. Our options further depleted after allowing Kyle Walker-Peteres join Southampton on loan in January.

While Aurier has impressed while attacking, defensively he remains a major liability. And following his repeated breach of lockdown regulations, the club are open to offloading him in the summer.

Hence, bringing in a new right-back should be a top priority for Tottenham. And, Dest, to that end would be a decent choice. The 19-year-old has impressed with Ajax this season, bagging two goals and six assists in 35 matches.

But PSG’s interest in the teenager could end up playing spoilsport in our attempts to sign him. Crowned the champions of France, they will be able to offer Champions League football without a doubt along with a chance to compete for top honours.

It remains to be seen if Tottenham decide to make an attempt to sign Dest come summer.
