Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho ‘wouldn’t swap’ Giovani Lo Celso for Bruno Fernandes
Speaking to Sky Sports News on the eve of Tottenham’s clash against Sheffield United, Jose Mourinho has claimed that he wouldn’t swap star midfielder Giovani Lo Celso for Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes after Spurs missed out on the midfielder last summer.
Tottenham had held talks with Sporting Lisbon for the signing of Bruno Fernandes last summer. The player himself has revealed that he had agreed on a contract. But the club failed to close the deal as they were unable to come to agreement over a transfer fee. (h/t Sky Sports)
Instead we signed Giovani Lo Celso on loan from La Liga club Real Betis, before making his transfer permanent in January, following the departure of Christian Eriksen.

Fernandes, on the other hand, stayed put with Sporting till January, before eventually moving to England, joining our rivals Manchester United.
The Portuguese international has made a huge impact since joining the Red Devils and is the most in-form Premier League player at the moment. However, Mourinho has claimed he wouldn’t want to swap Lo Celso for his compatriot. (h/t Sky Sports News)
“[I wouldn’t swap Lo Celso] for any player. It’s not just for Bruno, but for any player.”
Indeed, Fernandes has made a big impact at United, no doubt. But Lo Celso has been very effective, even though he may not have scored as many goals. Having put behind his early injury troubles, the Argentine has easily been one of our top players this season, with his form being particularly impressive since the turn of the year.
The 24-year-old was brilliant in our win against West Ham United last time out, earning praise from club legend Graham Roberts.

So far, Lo Celso has scored two goals and created one more in 30 matches in all competitions. Those numbers ought to improve with time, there’s no doubt about that.
