According to a report from Bleacher Report (h/t Express), Everton are leading the race to sign Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who has also been linked with a move to Tottenham.

The Brazilian international moved to Barcelona in January 2018, but has endured a torrid eighteen months in Spain. As a result, the Catalans sent him out on loan to Bayern Munich last summer. While Coutinho has shown improvements during his time in Germany, his future remains in a limbo.

Bayern had the chance to sign him permanently, but have decided to pass up the opportunity. The midfielder also doesn’t feature in the plans at Barcelona, meaning he will most certainly be offloaded this summer. (h/t Express)

A return to the Premier League has been mooted strongly with the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton all taking an interest in the 28-year-old’s situation. (h/t Express)

While Giovani Lo Celso has stepped up admirably as the creative hub of the team since Christian Eriksen’s departure, adding another attacking midfielder of Coutinho’s quality would boost our team.

The Brazilian has improved during his time at Bayern and is well-versed with the demands of the Premier League. His ability to play in a midfield-three as well as on the left flank would come in handy to Tottenham.

However, as per the report, Everton have eked ahead in the race for the Barcelona star as Tottenham and Liverpool have both cooled off their interest in recent times.

Signing Coutinho on loan for a season would have been a good move. Especially with Barcelona willing to cover a large part of his wages. It now remains to be seen if Tottenham do decide to go after the Brazilian ahead of the next season.
