Jermaine Jenas tips Manchester City to sign Jan Vertonghen
Speaking on Five Live (h/t Football.london), former Tottenham Hotspur star Jermaine Jenas has backed Manchester City to make a move for out-of-contract Spurs’ defender Jan Vertonghen.
The 33-year-old Belgian international was out of contract with the club last month. While he has agreed a short term extension to see out the elongated 2019/20 campaign, his long-term future remains uncertain.
On a number of occasions, Vertonghen has dropped a hint that he is considering a move abroad. There has been interest in his services from Italy, but his wage demands have proved to be a problem.
And now, Jenas has claimed that Manchester City should make a move for the veteran defender once his contract with our club runs out. (h/t Football.london)
“One of the big signings I think they should go and get – and it’s a no-brainer for me – is Jan Vertonghen. They need a centre-half and he’s free. You drop him into a Pep Guardiola side that dominate the ball in every single game. And by the way I’m talking about back-up here; I’m not talking about replacing Laporte.”
Vertonghen has been at Tottenham since 2012, having signed from Dutch giants AFC Ajax. One of the most experienced players in the Premier League currently, the 33-year-old, however, hasn’t been a regular in the first-team this term.
The Belgian international has just started 18 of our 32 Premier League matches this season. Over the course of the season, the 33-year-old has shown signs of slowing down as well. However, his experience at this level would make him an asset.

It will be interesting to see if the club does offer a new contract to Vertonghen. If not, it is very much likely that he would move abroad rather than securing a transfer to Manchester City.
