Tottenham eye double swoop on Wigan for Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir
According to a report from The Sun, Tottenham are eyeing a double raid on Wigan Athletic for the signing of teenagers Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir.
Wigan were placed into administration last Wednesday despite a recent change of owners. And clubs from within England and Scotland are reportedly eyeing up moves for a number of the club’s players to recruit them on the cheap.
Tottenham, too, have made overtures to secure two of Wigan’s top young talents in the form of Gelhardt and Weir, as per the report.
The 18-year-old Gelhardt is a centre-forward by trade. Having come through the youth ranks, the teenager has become a first-team regular this season. Till date, he has featured 19 times across all competitions for the Latics’, scoring one goal.
The report adds that Tottenham scouts see a bright future for the 18-year-old and believe that he can be groomed into the next Harry Kane. However, Everton are also interested in the signing of the teenage forward.
Weir, too, is a product of the Wigan youth academy. He broke into the first-team last season. But, he has made just four senior appearances to date, one of which came in the ongoing campaign. The central midfielder is also wanted by Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. (h/t The Sun)

Both Weir and Gelhart are regulars for the England U-18 team and have racked up six appearances each. Given the current state of the transfer market, investing in youngsters with potential such as the Wigan duo would be a good move by the club for the future.
It remains to be seen if this leads to anything substantial in the coming weeks though.
