Jose Mourinho confirms Ledley King appointment to backroom staff

As reported by the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed the appointment of club legend Ledley King to his backroom staff ahead of next season.

Mourinho revealed last week that long-term assistant Ricardo Formosinho would be leaving once the season ended. And while the club is yet to make the appointment official, Mourinho revealed after Spurs’ 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on the final day that King will be joining his coaching staff. “I don’t think the club will be upset with me by making it official. We are going to replace Ricardo with Ledley King. I met him. I worked quite close with him in this period. I know what he can give. I know what he has to learn and he’s very happy to do it.”

A one-club man, King made over 320 appearances for Spurs. Injuries hampered his career, but the former England international is an icon and a legend at the club. (h/t Evening Standard)

“The fans of course love him, and he’s one more connection with our fans, the local community, from the young people that he knows from the academy.”

King worked with Mourinho and the first-team during lockdown, helping the players with the defensive side of the game. And with Formosinho’s departure opening up a spot in the staff, King will be taking it, although it is unclear as to what his role exactly will be.

King’s appointment will, no doubt, be a big boost for the club. A legendary figure at Tottenham, his presence will egg the players to perform better. In addition, he could also help our defence tighten things up at the back after a disappointing campaign.
