Hugo Lloris set for a new contract at Tottenham

According to a report from ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur are considering offering a new contract to captain and first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The 33-year-old Frenchman has been with the club for over eight years now, having arrived back in 2012. Till date he has racked up 325 appearances for the club, keeping 112 clean sheets in the process.

Set for a new contract?

The 2019/20 began on a difficult note for Lloris, with an elbow injury sidelining him for a lengthy spell. His form dipped following his return to full fitness. However, since the restart of the season last month, the 33-year-old has rediscovered his best form.

While there have been speculations that Tottenham are in the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer, now it is being claimed that the club will be looking to hand Lloris a new contract.

The Frenchman, who will turn 34 later this year, is currently tied down with the club till 2022. The report claims that talks over a new deal for the club captain will begin soon.

It does come as a bit of a surprise that the club is willing to extend his current contract beyond the current two years, considering that he will be 36 and in the final phase of his career by 2022. Nonetheless, having him within the squad, even though he might not be at his best, would be a major boost for everyone in the team.

With the finances affected, there is unlikely to be a lot of budget available this summer, meaning investment over a new goalkeeper may not be made. But bringing in a new custodian next year and slowly phasing Lloris out of the first-team should be something Mourinho & co. should seriously consider.
