Tottenham plan late swoop to beat Arsenal in race for Willian
According to a report from the Independent (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a late swoop to sign Chelsea star Willian on a free transfer from under the noses of arch rivals Arsenal.
The 31-year-old’s contract with Chelsea was set to expire at the end of June. However, the extension of the season due to the pandemic saw him prolong his deal till the end of August. His contract situation has led to intense speculations surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham had been linked with a move for the Brazilian international, who will be turning 32 later this week. However, it has since been claimed that Arsenal are set to beat us to the winger’s signing.
But as per the aforementioned report, Spurs haven’t given up on the attempts to land Willian. The club, in fact, are plotting a late swoop in order to thwart the Gunners from signing the Chelsea star.
Willian has a great relationship with Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho. It was the Portuguese tactician that brought him to Chelsea back in the summer of 2013, signing him from under our noses.
And while the winger is well into his thirties, his experience and fitness levels mean he would be able to bring a lot to the table should he make the switch from the Bridge to our club.
