West Bromwich Albion join Tottenham in Troy Deeney pursuit
According to the Express and Star, newly-promoted Premier League club West Bromwich Albion have entered the race to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney, who has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
Watford were relegated from the Premier League last month. As a result, yhey are now looking at cost-cutting measures ahead. And Deeney, who is one of their top earners, is likely to be allowed to leave in the ongoing transfer window. (h/t Daily Mail)
Deeney came through the youth ranks at Walsall and had a loan spell at Halesowen, before joining Watford in 2010. Till date, he has featured 398 times for the Hornets, scoring 139 goals and setting up 59 more.
One of their top performers year after year, Deeney battled with injuries during the 2019/20 campaign. But, he still managed to contribute with 10 goals and 2 assists in 27 Premier League outings.
As per the aforementioned report, Tottenham have shown an interest in signing the Englishman as a potential backup for star striker Harry Kane.
It is no secret that the club suffered when Kane was sidelined for a lengthy period this past season. Having sent Troy Parrott out on loan, manager Jose Mourinho has no other centre-forward at his disposal to cover for the England captain.
Deeney, to that end, would have been a handy option, considering his experience and pedigree. However, we will now have to face competition from West Brom to sign the 32-year-old. The Baggies are keen to reinforce their squad ahead of their PL return and are exploring a loan move for Deeney. (h/t Express and Star)
