Jose Mourinho gives his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season loss to Watford

According to the club’s official site, Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has given his verdict on the club’s pre-season loss to Watford.

Spurs fell 2-1 away to Watford in our final pre-season match of the summer. Domingos Quina and Andre Grey gave the Hornets a 2-0 goal before the break. Although Son Heung-Min reduced the deficit through a second-half penalty, we were unable to draw level.

Spurs had a few late chances late on including a penalty appeal by Dele Alli. The game ended with Paulo Gazzaniga going into the Watford box for a late corner.

The game however ensured players such as Tanguy Ndombele and Davinson Sanchez got valuable game time under their belts. The fact was not lost on Mourinho who saw positives to take home despite the reversal.

“I would say that those are the positives, players who needed minutes had them, some players played 90 minutes.”

The game was no walk in the park as Watford proved to be a dangerous opponent. The Hornets were competitive and gave us a good run out ahead of the new season. Mourinho believes this will hold his side in good stead.

“Also positive was that Watford took it very seriously. I liked that. They competed, they were aggressive, they made the game very hard, those are all positives.”

Going down swinging

The players showed good spirit and did their best despite the early setbacks. Although we failed to turn it around this time, it augurs well for the future.

“It was a game to give us minutes and a competitive mentality and I really liked the fact that in the last minute, we are fighting to try to score.”
