Gareth Bale’s return could see the end of Erik Lamela at Tottenham Hotspur
According to The Times, Gareth Bale’s return to Tottenham Hotspur could spark the end of the road for Erik Lamela at the club.
Much was expected of the 28-year-old when he joined Spurs in 2013. Unfortunately, injuries have seen his impact severely restricted. In fact, the Argentine has made 223 appearances while scoring 33 goals and assisting 47 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
During this same time, he has spent 636 days on the sidelines missing 97 games.(h/t Transfermarkt)
Lamela was left out of the Spurs starting lineup that faced Lokomotiv Plovdiv yesterday. Now that the club are on the verge of signing Bale, it could spark the end of his time at the Lane. (h/t The Times)
While he has looked impressive at times, his impact as a whole has been rather underwhelming. With the likes of Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Giovani Lo Celso, and now Bale all available, the club can do without Lamela.
The Argentine is not the only player who could make way. According to the report, Alli is another player who could find himself on his way out.
Real Madrid passed on signing him as part of the Bale deal and according to David Ornstein, he looks likely to stay unless something forces the club’s hand.

Of the two, we feel Lamela is expendable given the wealth of options at our disposal. The Argentine’s lack of fitness and form have proved frustrating at times.
Alli, on the other hand, is younger and still has time on his side to turn his current slump around. It promises to be a new dawn at Spurs, but for Lamela, he might as well be on the other side of the world.
