Carabao Cup clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient postponed due to coronavirus
According to Sky Sports, the Carabao Cup third-round clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient scheduled for tonight has been called off.
This comes after 18 players or staff of the O’s were diagnosed with coronavirus. Orient’s facilities such as the Breyer Group Stadium and training ground have been closed until further notice.
The testing was sponsored by Tottenham. It took place after the 2-2- draw against Mansfield on Saturday.
According to the report, discussions are ongoing between the relevant stakeholders on the decision not to play tonight’s game.
The clubs of the top two tiers of English football are not compelled to take weekly coronavirus tests. Both Plymouth Argyle, who Orient beat in last week’s Carabao Cup second-round tie, and last Saturday’s league opposition Mansfield, will take an additional round of testing as a precaution.
According to The Sun, Tottenham will receive a bye to the next round. Meanwhile, Orient will miss out on a £100,000 windfall, with the game scheduled to be televised on Sky Sports.
Orient had proposed a solution where their youth team would have faced off against Spurs. The logic behind it is that the kids had not been in contact with the senior side that is now in self-isolation.
Spurs were unhappy with the prospect and had no interest in a situation that ran the risk of the infection spreading.

The winner of the tie is scheduled to play the winner of the Chelsea vs Barnsley tie in the fourth round. Given our Europa Lague commitments, it is difficult to see when the match could have been rescheduled. (h/t Sky Sports)
