Tottenham Hotspur reach an agreement to sign Carlos Vinicius

According to Portuguese journalist Goncalo Lopes via Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Carlos Vinicius from Benfica.

The Brazilian striker will initially join on a season-long loan. According to Romano, Spurs can make the deal permanent next summer for €45m.

Signing a striker will cap off what has been an excellent summer for the team from North London.

With Troy Parrott leaving on loan, we once again ran the risk of going into the season with Harry Kane as our lone striker.

As the events of last season proved, an ill-timed injury to the England captain has the potential to derail our campaign. With that in mind, manager Jose Mourinho was keen to bring in a backup to Kane.

In Vinicius he has got just that. A dependable forward who can be called upon when needed and is prolific in his own right, he scored 24 goals and assisted 13 more in 47 games for Benfica last season. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Interestingly, the 25-year-old began his career as a central defender. Having played as a striker for the first time just three years ago, the Brazilian has gone on to make a name for himself up the pitch. Last season’s top scorer in the Primeira Liga, Vinicius had also drawn interest from Inter Milan and Juventus.

According to Romano, Mourinho will approve the deal that will bring Vinicius to Tottenham. The Brazilian was not the only player on the club’s radar. Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik was also a target but an agreement could not be reached.
