Real Madrid earmark Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon as long term left-back solution
According to Italian publication Calciomercato (h/t Football.london), Real Madrid are watching the progress of Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon with interest.
The Spanish international had been on Real’s books until this summer. Reguilon saw his stock increase after an impressive loan spell at Sevilla last season.
Despite being named as the Spanish top-flight’s best left-back, Reguilon found himself behind the likes of both Marcelo and Ferland Mendy when he returned to the Bernabeu.
Spurs swooped in to secure the 23-year-old for £27.6m. He has enjoyed an excellent start to life in North London and has hit the ground running.
However, we will not be the only ones watching his progress with interest. Real can trigger a £40.5m buy-back clause in his contract in 2021 or 2022. Given his progress so far, that remains a fearful possibility.
While Mendy has been decent, he hasn’t set pulses racing. If both players continue the current trajectory, it will be a matter of time before Reguilon reigns supreme.
The Spaniard has made three appearances for Spurs so far. During this time, he picked up one assist in the Carabao Cup win over Chelsea. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Reguilon also played a starring role as Spurs routed Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford. The 23-year-old is already amongst the best left-backs in the league and appears to have usurped Ben Davies as the first-choice Spurs player in that position.
