Sergio Reguilon joined Tottenham Hotspur thanks to Jose Mourinho and Gareth Bale
Speaking to Sky Sports, Spanish international Sergio Reguilon has revealed why he joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The left-back spent last season on loan from Real Madrid at Sevilla. He played a key role in the La Liga side’s Europa League success. This prompted interest in him, with both Spurs and Manchester United facing off.
Real considered him to be surplus to requirements and were only happy to move him on. Spurs were the beneficiaries of that decision and have benefitted since.
Despite considerable interest in his services, Reguilon only had eyes for one club. He got his wish as Spurs swooped in to sign him.
“There was a broad market but as soon as I heard of Tottenham’s interest, it was simple.”
He has credited both Jose Mourinho and Gareth Bale in helping him make up his mind. Teammates at Real, Reguilon was able to get an inner perspective of Spurs from the Welshman. Having spent a number of years at Tottenham, Bale was able to tell Reguilon just what to expect.
“He told me what it was like at Tottenham. It was helpful for me to come here with someone who was already a team-mate.”
So far, he has enjoyed life in North London. He admits that life at the club has come as a pleasant surprise both on and off the field.
“Since I arrived here, the truth is the club has surprised me in a very good way. The training facilities, my team-mates, everything. The stadium is insane. I have really enjoyed it so far.”
Life away from one’s home country is never easy. Reguilon took a leap of faith and it has worked wonderfully for him so far.
