Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho believes Manchester clubs’ schedules lack clarity
According to ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has raised the issue of both Manchester clubs having played one match less than their rivals around them.
Both Manchester City and Manchester United have played just nine times while the top teams have all played ten. The other sides to have played a match fewer include Burnley and Aston Villa.
“It’s difficult to accept that because it can affect the competition.”
The Manchester clubs missed the opening day fixtures thanks to their involvement in European competitions last season. They were both however knocked out and failed to make it all the way. This commitment saw them get extended break, in line with the Premier League’s decision to give each team a 30-day break.
With City and United just five and six points behind, Spurs are within touching distance if they get all three points from their game in hand. Given the particular scenario, Mourinho’s concerns are understandable.
“I think it is also very difficult to accept that four clubs have one match less than the others and I don’t even know when they’re going to play these matches which in every [other] country would be impossible.”
The need to put rules in place
The Spurs boss has called for the matches to be played before the halfway point of the season is reached. However, according to the report, there is no provision that compels the Premier League to doing so.
Aston Villa will now have played another game less after their game against Newcastle United was postponed after a covid outbreak. Mourinho is at a loss to explain when our rivals will play these matches. He also mentioned how Spurs played four times in a week without any fuss.
“We played four matches in one week and nobody was crying or supporting us about it. And now my colleagues, when do they play these matches.”

Despite starting the season late, the Manchester clubs will end their campaign on the same day as the other clubs. This will mean they have to accommodate the pending fixtures in their busy schedule.
Given how packed it is this season, the strain on the players would be immense. While we hope they falter, we would also like to think that Mourinho is bringing up an issue that needs to be resolved. After all, we may be on the receiving end of it in the future.
