“One of my boys”: Mourinho throws support behind Tottenham ace who suffered online abuse after Liverpool defeat

Jose Mourinho issues statement in support of Steven Bergwijn after online abuse

As reported by Sky Sports, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has thrown his support behind Steven Bergwijn after the forward suffered online abuse post the club’s defeat to Liverpool.

Tottenham lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield earlier this week, which meant the Reds usurped the top spot in the Premier League table from us. Mohamed Salah had put the Reds in front but Son Heung-min pulled us back on level terms.

Early in the second half, Tottenham had a couple of great chances to take the lead, but Bergwijn hit the post while Harry Kane headed over from a promising position. A late header from Roberto Firmino sealed all three points for the reigning champions.

Bergwijn is yet to score for Tottenham this season

Bergwijn, who is yet to score a single goal this season, was criticised and was subject to plenty of online abuse post the defeat. Mourinho, though, has backed the Dutchman and insisted that he has the entire club behind him. (h/t Sky Sports)

“I don’t know what I can do apart from the player knowing that in this club we are all together. I know that in some clubs with some people there is a culture of ‘they lost, we drew, and I won…’ Here, we lose, we win, and we draw together. He has us and we have him.”

The Portuguese further praised the Dutchman for the efforts he puts in for the benefit of the team.

“He is one of my boys. Period. There is no point for me to individualise. He is a good professional; he works hard for the team [and] he gives everything he can.”

While it is true that Bergwijn hasn’t made the best of starts to the season, subjecting him to abuse online doesn’t achieve anything. The Dutchman has shown he can be an asset to us and when things are difficult, he needs the support of the fans.
