Tottenham Hotspur set to cancel Gedson Fernandes loan deal
According to Portuguese publication A Bola, as carried by the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are close to cancelling their loan deal with SL Benfica for out-of-favour midfielder Gedson Fernandes.
The 21-year-old arrived at Tottenham on an eighteen-month loan deal in the January transfer window earlier this year. Tottenham also had the option to sign the midfielder for £46m. However, he has never quite been able to carve out a place in the side under Mourinho.
Gedson made just 12 appearances in the second half of the last season. His fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in the current campaign, however, with Mourinho using him just one time across all competitions. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Competition for places has been intense in midfield with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg arriving and Tanguy Ndombele rediscovering his form. Add to it, Moussa Sissoko, Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks, and one can see why Fernandes isn’t getting minutes.
So much so that Mourinho had to cut the midfielder from our Europa League squad. And the Portuguese tactician admitted in his press conference on Sunday that the situation was far from favourable and would honour Benfica’s decision in the matter.
“If he remains at the club from January, I cannot answer you. I truly believe that we have to respect the player and Benfica. The situation is sad because he was out of the Europa League list and by being out of that list reduced immediately a chance of nine matches that we already played in the Europa League.”
And reports in Portugal (h/t Daily Mail) are claiming that the two clubs have already reached an agreement to cut short his loan spell come next month.

It is claimed that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has already given the go-ahead to bring Fernandes back to the club. And the 21-year-old will be at manager Jorge Jesus’ disposal starting next month.
A talented player, things never quite worked out for Fernandes at Tottenham. Ending the loan deal would be the best course of action for everyone involved.
