Jose Mourinho hits out critics of Tottenham Hotspur’s style of play

As reported by the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has lashed out at the critics against his team’s style of play.

Under Jose, Tottenham have developed into a fierce counterattacking unit that has secured impressive wins against the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and held Chelsea to a draw.

Had they taken their chances, Spurs would have ended up on the winning side against reigning champions Liverpool at Anfield earlier this week as well. However, talks post the match were mostly centred around how Liverpool dominated the possession, leading to criticism from some quarters over the way Jose sets his team up.

But the Portuguese manager has hit out at those critics, insisting that there is a lot more to a football game than just possession stats and claiming that selective stats are like badly cooked meat. (h/t Evening Standard)

“You [the media] love the word possession. And you love the stats. Sometimes you say, ‘the stats say player B had 92% of efficiency in his passing.’ But the stats don’t say that player only made passes of only two metres.

“So the stats many many times are like an incredible piece of meat or fish but badly cooked. It doesn’t tell me much. What it tells me is the number of goals you score and the number of chances that you create.”

Having dropped points against Crystal Palace and Liverpool in the last two games, it is important that Mourinho & co. bounce back strongly when they face Leicester City on Sunday.
