Marcel Sabitzer is a target for Tottenham

Tottenham more likely to sign Marcel Sabitzer in the summer rather than January

A report by The Athletic (subscription required) mentions that things would have to drastically change in order for Marcel Sabitzer to move to Tottenham Hotspur in January.

RB Leipzig are in a strong position in the league as they sit in 2nd place, just two points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. Moreover, the club is also in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

In such a situation, the Bundesliga would be hesitant to sell any of their main players, especially their club captain. Speaking to Bild (h/t The Athletic) Leipzig director Marcus Krosche acknowledged that Sabitzer’s performances would attract interest from Europe’s top clubs.

“He has made a great development. It goes without saying that other clubs also notice this. attract interest.”

However, it seems more likely that Spurs would get their man in the summer. Then, as the report says, Leipzig would be in a weaker position and Sabitzer could be available for somewhere around £30million as he will enter the last 12 months of his contract.

Sabitzer could be a revolutionary signing

Truth be told, the 26-year-old would be a great fit for Jose Mourinho’s side. While Spurs already have an array of midfielders, a player like Sabitzer could only increase the quality and the depth of the squad.

If Spurs do manage to land him in the summer, then the wait would definitely be worth it. However, a move in January could have had a massive impact on the clubs’ title charge.

Currently, the Lilywhites sit just 4 points off the top of the table. With teams around them largely struggling to put together a consistent winning run, Spurs can force themselves back into the title picture with a few wins on the bounce.
