Tottenham Hotspur linked with a move for Lille defender Sven Botman in a bid to strengthen squad
Talking on the Transfer Window podcast (h/t Express), transfer expert Duncan Castles stated that Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho ‘likes’ Liverpool target Sven Botman as he looks to strengthen his squad.
Botman has also been linked with Liverpool among a number of other clubs. Mourinho is keen to improve two positions in his current squad.
One is in central midfield, which is his priority. The other, as Castles says, is a left-sided centre-back who is left-footed, which is exactly what Botman is.
“I can tell you that in addition to the interest from Liverpool, Jose Mourinho likes Botman as a player.”
There are, however, a few hiccups that may come along the way. Firstly, Mourinho might have trouble in securing the funds to make these deals happen in January. Hence, Castle says a summer move is more likely for the player.
“Whether he will get money to do those deals in January I think is highly questionable.”
A highly-rated prospect
He also says that Botman’s camp is a little cautious about a move in January. The 20-year-old moved to LOSC Lille just last summer from Ajax. (h/t Express)
He has since impressed with his performances this season. The Dutchman has started 18 out of Lille’s 19 Ligue 1 games this season as Lille target their first league title in 10 years.
The French club are 3rd in the table, level on points with Paris Saint-Germain and just a point behind league leaders Olympique Lyon.

From Cristophe Galtier’s point of view, losing a first-team player mid-season does not make a lot of sense. But for Spurs, it could prove to be a great move in the long as well as short term.
