Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho tipped to axe Serge Aurier and sign a replacement
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho to axe Serge Aurier and replace him in the summer.
The 28-year-old has been with Tottenham since 2017, having arrived from PSG. However, he has never really convinced due to his error-prone nature in defence.
One such error against Liverpool last week saw Jose Mourinho take him off at half-time. Following that, Aurier was said to have stormed off from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, unhappy with the call.
Aurier was then axed from our matchday squad for the subsequent league game against Brighton. And while he was reinstated to the lineup against Chelsea, question marks remain over his future. And, Agbonlahor has now claimed that it wouldn’t be a surprise if Mourinho looks to replace him this summer.
“In the Spurs documentary [Mourinho] says to [Aurier]: ‘I don’t like you on set pieces, you’re going to make a mistake. Whatever was said at half time was deserved because I thought he was dreadful in his defending against Liverpool.
“If he’s not taken that well I don’t blame Jose Mourinho for leaving him out. I’m sure Jose Mourinho will be looking for a long-term replacement for Aurier.”

Aurier’s contract with Tottenham runs out in the summer of 2022. So, it would make a lot of sense for the club to part ways with him in the upcoming summer transfer window.
It has been reported that Norwich City’s Max Aarons is being lined up as a long-term replacement for the Tottenham man. The youngster could prove to be a solid addition to the ranks and at 21, would be a long-term investment as well.
