Jamie Carragher criticizes Mourinho for Tottenham Hotspur’s style of play
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has slammed Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho for his tactics and style of play (h/t Daily Mail). He reckons that Spurs were a better side under former manager Mauricio Pochettino than what they are currently.
After some early-season optimism, Mourinho’s side have tailed off spectacularly in the last few months. They are in 9th place after 23 games, winning just 10 games. Just once have they won in their last five league outings and that has been compounded by an FA Cup exit.
The Portuguese tactician can again come under the scanner for his trademark approach to games. He sets up his side to endure opposition attacks and then hit them on the counter. However, that has hardly worked this season.
Carragher goes full ballistic on Mourinho
The Liverpool legend has torn into Mourinho asking whether winning a trophy would justify this sort of counter-attacking style of play from him. He felt that Mourinho was only brought in to make the difference in cup finals, a stage where Pochettino faltered during his tenure.
“They are a long way from that Pochettino team and I don’t think winning that trophy, if the performances and league position carries on as it is, I don’t think it justifies it.
“I do worry where Tottenham are in terms of getting back to a top-four club. I think they are a long way from that. And the actual football they are playing to get there, they need to have results to play like that and they are not getting results at this moment.”
Spurs are on a lengthy trophy drought since 2008 and even though they are in the final of the EFL Cup this season, there still remains doubt over the club and manager. Carragher went on to say that Spurs’ form was alarming, given they have dropped to ninth place and aren’t producing results.
