Hugo Lloris hints Mourinho tactics were the reason for Tottenham defeat vs Arsenal
Speaking to RMC Sport (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has hinted that the tactics employed by manager Jose Mourinho were the reason for his team’s defeat to Arsenal.
Tottenham faced off against Arsenal in the North London Derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Heading into the game on the back of a five-game winning run, in which goals were flowing freely, Spurs looked devoid of all the confidence and swagger against their rivals.
Instead, the team sat back without showing any urgency or intensity, allowing Arsenal to control the game. And even though Erik Lamela gave Tottenham the lead, goals from Martin Odegaard and Alexandre Lacazette sealed a 2-1 win for the Gunners.
Speaking after the game, Lloris has claimed that he expected more from his teammates on the evening. He added that the players looked shackled, hinting at the flaw in Mourinho’s tactics for the game.
“We were expecting a little more, to see another Tottenham. I think that we can be proud of what we did when we were down to 10 men, because that is when we increased our levels of intensity and aggression.
“And we pushed our opponents into making mistakes, we could have equalised with a little more luck. But before that, it was a match I feel that was played with a lot of fear. I felt like we did not feel free and Arsenal were able to profit. Two teams in a lot of doubt. And in the end, Arsenal won at home.”

Tottenham played with much more gusto and intensity after Erik Lamela was sent off late in the game and looked so dangerous. So, it does beg the question as to why the team couldn’t play that way from the kick-off. A question Mourinho needs to answer and answer soon.
