Tottenham eyeing summer transfer for Jannik Vestergaard
According to the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Southampton’s towering defender Jannik Vestergaard in the summer transfer window.
Vestergaard, 28, has been with Southampton since 2018, having joined them from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach. He has gradually grown into a key player for the Saints, enjoying a solid campaign despite the club’s struggles in recent weeks.
Vestergaard has featured 21 times in the ongoing campaign, chipping in with three goals. In all, he has made 68 appearances for Southampton so far. The centre-back has also been capped 20 times by the Denmark national team. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Vestergaard is set to enter the final year of his contract with Southampton at the end of the season. And this has alerted Tottenham, who are now plotting a transfer for the 28-year-old centre-back.
Jose Mourinho, as per the report, has made the signing of a new centre-back a top priority. The Portuguese started the season with Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier as his preferred central defensive pairing. However, the latter has fallen out of favour of late with Davinson Sanchez being preferred instead.
With Alderweireld not getting any younger either, it is important that Tottenham bolster their ranks with a quality centre-back in the summer. Vestergaard, to that end, can be a handy addition. The Danish international has proven himself at the Premier League level and has experience under his belt.

Throw in the fact that he will be in the final year of his contract, he could be available for a bargain price as well. Tottenham did business with Southampton last summer for the transfer of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. And the Dane has been a huge hit at the club.
Hopefully, Tottenham can repeat the same trick with the transfer of Vestergaard from St. Mary’s.
