Tottenham will struggle to sign Gareth Bale following Europa League exit
Speaking on Football Insider (h/t Express), former Leeds United star Danny Mills has claimed that Tottenham might find it difficult to sign Gareth Bale on a permanent transfer in the summer. That is because of the financial implications of the club’s exit from the UEFA Europa League.
Tottenham were sent packing from the Europa Legue by Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, who beat the Londoners 3-0 after having lost 2-0 in the first leg.
The defeat meant Spurs could now face the prospect of not playing Champions League football for two seasons in a row as their chances of a top four finish in the Premier League are looking bleak. And Mills believes that this could impact Spurs’ hopes of signing Bale on a permanent basis.
The 31-year-old arrived at Tottenham in the last summer, joining on loan from Real Madrid. After an indifferent start to life in his second spell at the club, Bale has started to show his quality in recent weeks, further fueling that a permanent return to the club could be on the cards.
Mills, though, sees difficulties in that going through because of the financial impact of Spurs’ Europa League elimination. Quizzed about whether this would put their hopes of Bale arriving on a permanent basis in jeopardy, he said: “Quite possibly, yes.”
“What is it, £150million the Champions League is worth? It’s a lot of money. You can always afford players a mistake, missed chance, a slip, as long as they work their absolute socks off and give absolutely everything in that game, even if they only last 60 minutes.

Bale has shown signs of his quality in recent weeks. However, his wages could prove to be difficult to afford for Tottenham given the prevalent financial circumstances. It remains to be seen if there is an attempt made to bring him back to the club again next summer.
