Transfer News: Tottenham yet to contact Benfica over Carlos Vinicius move

According to Portuguese news publication A Bola (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are yet to make contact with SL Benfica over the matter of a permanent transfer for Carlos Vinicius.

The 25-year-old arrived at Tottenham Hotspur last summer on a season-long loan deal. The agreement also came with an option for Spurs to make his transfer permanent for a fee of around £38m. Recent reports had, however, claimed that Tottenham were trying to negotiate a lower fee in the range of £17m to sign the Brazilian striker.

But, any such claims are being refuted by the Portuguese publication, who claim that Tottenham and Benfica haven’t had any discussions over Vinicius’ future, that there has been no contact with the clubs.

This is in direct contrast to a report from Correio da Manha last week that had insisted that Spurs had informed Benfica they will sign him permanently, given as they see him as the ideal partner for Harry Kane. (h/t Sport Witness)

Vinicius, since arriving at Tottenham, has made 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals in the process and setting up three more for his teammates. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The Brazilian is yet to get a string of starts in the lineup, which is hard given the form that Harry Kane has been in this season. But, more often than not, when he has been called upon Vinicius has delivered. And, moreover, he doesn’t seem unhappy that he has had to play second-fiddle to Kane either.

So, a permanent transfer for Vinicius to Tottenham would make a lot of sense, although it is unlikely that the club would be willing to pay the previously agreed fee of £38m.
