Southampton initiate contract talks with Tottenham target Jannik Vestergaard
According to Hampshire Live, Tottenham Hotspur may have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Jannik Vestergaard as Southampton have opened fresh contract talks with him.
The 28-year-old Vestergaard has been with Tottenham since the summer of 2018, having arrived from German club Borussia Monchengladbach. During his three years at the club, the towering Dane has gradually grown into an integral member of the team.
Vestergaard had been quite impressive in the ongoing season as well, playing a key role in Southampton’s brilliant start to the season. And his performances, despite the Saints’ recent problems, have attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur heading into the summer window.
Spurs will need to bolster their defensive options before next season given as Toby Alderweireld is not getting any younger while Eric Dier has endured a steep decline in form over the course of the current season. With the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon inconsistent, a new, proven centre-back would be a welcome addition for the club.
Vestergaard, to that end, can be a handy addition. In his peak years, the Denmark international has been in the Premier League for almost three years now. Add to it, the fact that he is entering the final year of his contract with Southampton made him an even more appealing target.
However, the Saints, seemingly having learnt from the Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg transfer last summer, have opened talks over a new contract for Vestergaard.

It remains to be seen whether Vestergaard is open to putting pen on paper on a new deal at Southampton. If he does not, the south coast club will invariably be forced into cashing in on him instead of losing him for nothing a year later. Such a scenario would be perfect for Tottenham to make a swoop for the centre-back.
