Transfer News: Tottenham set to battle Chelsea for Andrea Belotti
According to Italian news outlet Corriere Granato (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle with Chelsea and two more clubs for the transfer of Torino striker Andrea Belotti.
The 27-year-old has been one of the most consistent and prolific goalscorers in Italy in the recent seasons. However, with his contract with Torino set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 season, his future at the club has been called into question.
The Granata are intent on handing him a new two-year contract with an option of extending it by a further twelve months. Such a deal would see his yearly wages rise by £850,000. However, an exit seems more likely given as Torino are battling for survival in Serie A.
Belotti’s situation has alerted a host of top clubs across Europe, with as many as four Premier League clubs taking an interest in the Italian international. Among those clubs are Tottenham Hotspur as well.
Spurs have Harry Kane as their ace striker with Carlos Vinicius for backup. However, the latter is only on loan at the club and could return to his parent side SL Benfica at the end of the season. Furthermore, Kane’s future at the club has also been called into question recently as well.
Even if Kane does not leave, adding another goalscorer to the ranks would be the right move for Tottenham. Belotti, to that end, can be an excellent choice. However, the 27-year-old has a mammoth release clause worth £85m that is applicable to foreign clubs, which would put him out of reach for Tottenham.

The report, however, does add that any club interested in signing Belotti would not have to meet the release clause as Torino would be open to selling him at a lower fee due to his relationship with the club hierarchy.
While he would, without a doubt, be a fine transfer addition for Tottenham, it is unlikely that Belotti would join the club to play second-fiddle to Tottenham. Then there is also the interest from the likes of Chelsea, who eye him as an alternative for Erling Haaland, along with West Ham and Everton as well.
