Tottenham Transfer News: Liverpool tried to sign Sergio Reguilon last summer
According to news from The Athletic (Subscription Required), Liverpool were interested in securing a transfer for Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon last summer.
Liverpool were keen on addressing their overreliance on the full-back duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson while also reduce the burden on the duo. To that end, the Reds had a shortlist of options that they were looking to sign. And on that list was Reguilon, who at the time was still at Real Madrid after enjoying a brilliant loan spell at Sevilla. (h/t The Athletic)
However, Liverpool opted to bring in Greek full-back Kostas Tsimikas while Tottenham landed the transfer of Reguilon. And it’s safe to say that we got the better of the deal without a doubt.
Indeed, Tsimikas has hardly had a look-in into the side at Liverpool, whereas Sergio Reguilon has displaced Ben Davies to establish himself as the first-choice left-back at Tottenham.
The Spanish full-back’s flying forward forays have already made him a fan favourite at the club. So far this term, the former Real Madrid academy man has produced a return of five assists from 28 games across all competitions. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Reguilon has had a couple of poor games of late but the 24-year-old has proven himself to be a reliable option in defence and attack so far in his first season in England.
