Tottenham star Harry Kane ‘proud of fans’ for role in stopping European Super League

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports (h/t Evening Standard), Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has claimed that he is proud of the football fans to have brought down the European Super League.

The headlines in the footballing world have been dominated by the breakaway European Super League for the past week. The renegade league – a brainchild of Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, was announced last Sunday, with 12 “founding member teams” that also included Tottenham Hotspur.

The bizarre concept of there being no concept of promotion/relegation, no stakes involved and the closed nature of the competition sparked fury among fans, ex-players, pundits. The backlash eventually got so big that one by one each of the English clubs withdrew from the competition, bringing the idea to a halt before it even took off.

And Kane has now hailed the fans for the part they played in ensuring that the Super League never really got going.

“I liked the outcome of it – I didn’t like the idea of it if I am totally honest. I can totally understand the fans’ point of view. From a lot of people’s view it wasn’t quite right. It is what it is. It’s ended for now. I don’t know if they are going to come back with some sort of solution down the road.

“I am proud of the fans for sticking up for what they believe in and what they wanted and I am glad what the outcome has become. For football in general, people have spoken about the competitiveness, it is a really important part of football, that is the reason we play to have that hunger and desire to win and be the best so from that point of view, I totally get it.”
