Tottenham Hotspur legend insists a transfer outside England is the way forward for Harry Kane
Speaking to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur legend Steve Archibald stated that a transfer to Manchester United would not be a big step up, and that Harry Kane should go abroad to take the next big step in his career.
Kane is arguably the most important player in the Spurs squad. The 27-year-old goal-scoring sensation has 223 goals for the senior Tottenham side in 330 games and this year, alongside Son Heung-min, has been irresistible up front. (h/t transfermarkt)
But the youth academy product is yet to win a Premier League title at his boyhood club and looks set to miss out on playing in Champions League football next season.
That could be a deciding factor in him making a call on his Spurs future. And as recent as two weeks ago, he has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
Time for a switch?
But Archibald thinks that if Kane really wants to take the step up, he needs to leave for a foreign club; it is, after all, it is what he did himself when he departed Spurs in 1984 to move to Barcelona.
“I would imagine his next step will be a big European club, although there’s lot of interest in the UK. Spurs are as big as any club in England and, going to Manchester United right now, though financially the biggest club in world football, wouldn’t be a big step up, if any. They’re on a par. If he wants to step up, it has to be European football.”
Archibald also mentioned that the next manager and the project he envisages at Spurs could play a role in Kane leaving or staying at the club. Spurs are currently managed by interim boss, Ryan Mason, after Jose Mourinho was given the sack.
“I suppose it will be important who the next manager is, what the project is and whether he has faith in it.”
Champions League is the most elite competition in European club football. And a player in his prime, like Kane, would undoubtedly want to play in it.
