Transfer News: Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld will decide on future after new manager appointment

According to transfer news from Voetbal 24 (h/t Sports Mole), Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld will delay the decision on his future until a new manager is appointed by the club.

Alderweireld has been with Tottenham Hotspur since the summer of 2015, having joined from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. During his time at the club, the Belgian international has grown into a key player for the team, establishing himself as one of the best in the Premier League during his peak years.

With age, though, Alderweireld’s reputation has taken somewhat of a hit, but man-to-man he still remains our best defender ahead of the likes of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and summer signing Joe Rodon. And that is why Jose Mourinho tied him down to a new contract soon after taking over the reins as the manager in 2019.

But Alderweireld’s performance levels have seen a slight dip of late, with the Belgian even being in and out of the starting XI during the final few weeks of Mourinho’s reign. This had led to question marks over his immediate future at the club. Things have improved under interim boss Ryan Mason, though, with the 32-year-old being a regular fixture at the back.

Nevertheless, he continues to be linked with former club AFC Ajax while Club Brugge are also keen on taking him back to his homeland. And while Alderweireld would be open to playing closer to home, the Belgian wants to wait out and see who the next Tottenham manager is before he takes a decision on his transfer situation. Alderweireld is contracted with Tottenham till the summer of 2023. It now remains to be seen if he stays at the club beyond the current season or seeks a transfer away.
