Transfer News: Wales icon gives opinion on Gareth Bale staying in Premier League season amid Tottenham links
Speaking on Sky Sports News (h/t football.london), Wales legend Mark Hughes expressed his desire to see Gareth Bale playing in the Premier League next season as links to Tottenham Hotspur continue.
The Welsh winger left Spurs in 2013 to join Real Madrid in a blockbuster deal. But after a few years in Spain, his place in the starting XI became more and more precarious – first due to injury, and then because of form.
In an effort to rejuvenate his career, he joined Spurs last summer on a season-long loan under Jose Mourinho. Despite a slow start, he ended the current campaign with 16 goals in 34 games, which is amazing considering his lack of starts.
And seeing his scintillating form down the right-hand side, Spurs fans would hope that the 31-year-old stays at N17 for another season. Another option for him is to return to Real Madrid, where he still has one year left on his contract.
Back to Spurs?
Hughes, who is a Wales and Manchester United icon and the former Manchester City manager, was asked if he wanted to see Bale in the Premier League next season. Of course, his answer was a resounding yes.
“I hope so, I think he’s an outstanding player. It all depends on his situation at Real Madrid, it seems that in recent years he’s been quite strong that he’s said he isn’t going to be pushed out of Real Madrid and he’s got a year left on his contract but wants to go on his terms.”
He then reiterated the need for the Premier League to have players like Bale. It was, of course, the English top-flight where Bale made his name playing for Spurs first as a left-back, then as a winger, and later as a creative playmaker.
“I would love to see him playing week in week out in the Premier League, I think we need players such as Bale playing in this league of ours.”
