Thierry Henry backs Tottenham star Harry Kane to break Alan Shearer record
Speaking on the UMM Youtube channel (h/t Chronicle Live), former Arsenal forward and Premier League Hall of Famer, Thierry Henry has backed Tottenham superstar Harry Kane to break Alan Shearer’s record for most goals in the league.
Kane is one of the best strikers in the game currently. The 27-year-old Tottenham academy graduate has been tormenting defences for well over half a decade now and has, in the process, plundered 221 goals in 336 appearances for the club so far. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 2020/21 campaign was a prolific one for Kane as he ended the season with the Premier League Golden Boot as well as the Playmaker award, having amassed a tally of 23 goals and 14 assists in 35 league outings.
With that, Kane took his overall tally in the Premier League to a total of 166 goals in 245 appearances. Shearer, who is the all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League, in comparison has 260 strikes to his name.
And Henry, who was recently inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame along with Shearer himself, has backed Kane to shatter the record set by the former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers icon.
“People thought he was going to be a one-season wonder. Then they were like let’s see if he’s going to do it for two years. Then he did it for two years. ‘Now let’s see if he can do it for England’ – listen, now nobody can talk about that anymore.
“I’ve said so many times, I think I said it four years ago – he will smash Alan Shearer’s record if he stays in England. That is if he stays in England because he’s that good. Now he has to do it. Because obviously it’s easy to say – but the record of the big man is really high.”

Kane, at 27, still has his best years in front of him. And going by his performances in the season gone by, Henry’s assessment that he will break Shearer’s record should come true. However, whether he will still be playing for Tottenham when that happens remains to be seen as he continues to be linked with a summer move to Manchester City.
