Tottenham blow as Chelsea take steps to sign transfer target Orkun Kokcu
According to Turkish TV channel Vole (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea may be poised to beat Tottenham Hotspur and other teams in the race to sign Orkun Kokcu from Feyenoord.
Kokcu came through the youth ranks at Dutch club Feyenoord, whom he joined from Groningen in 2014. The midfielder made his first-team debut for the Eredivisie outfit in 2018 and has gradually grown into a pivotal player, raking in 78 appearances in which he has 11 goals and 13 assists.
On the back of his exploits for Feyenoord, Kokcu has also managed to get into the Turkish national team, for whom he has six caps till date. Having enjoyed an impressive 2020/21 season, the 20-year-old midfielder has attracted a lot of interest from several top clubs in Europe including Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan and Arsenal. However, it seems Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea may have the edge in the race to sign the midfielder. This is because former Blues striker and club legend Didier Drogba has helped arrange a meeting between the club and the player’s family. (h/t Daily Mail)
Having turned down a coaching role at Chelsea, the former Ivory Coast international remains associated in an ambassadorial capacity. But it is said that he holds a lot of sway when convincing players to move to Stamford Bridge. And, the club has seemingly enlisted his help to beat the competition for Kokcu’s transfer this summer. At 20, Kokcu has shown a lot of promise and should only improve and get better from here. Considering that, he would have been a good addition at Tottenham to replace someone like Moussa Sissoko who is well into his thirties. However, it seems as if Chelsea hold all the aces in the race for the Turkish international.
