Paulo Fonseca to Tottenham off; Gennaro Gattuso favourite for manager job
According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur will not be appointing Paulo Fonseca as their manager, with Gennaro Gattuso now the favourite for the job.
After weeks and weeks of speculations, it finally looked like Tottenham were set to name Fonseca their manager, with the Portuguese boss having agreed terms over a move. However, in yet another bizarre turn of events, much like the way things panned out with Antonio Conte, talks between Fonseca and Tottenham have broken down. (h/t The Athletic)
Instead, Tottenham have now turned their sights towards former AC Milan and Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso. The former Italy international was released by Napoli at the end of the season, following which he was named the manager of Fiorentina.
However, Gattuso quit his post from the Viola just after 23 days of his appointment, which has seemingly prompted Tottenham’s new Managing Director of Sports, Fabio Paratici, to line him up as the next manager. (h/t The Athletic)
The Evening Standard specifies that the reasons behind talks breaking down between Fonseca and the club are not because of the finances involved. Despite having agreed a two-year deal with the Portuguese, a move is now off, with Gattuso emerging as the leading candidate to become the next Tottenham manager.

Following the whole episode with Conte, this latest development has to be borderline embarrassing for Tottenham Hotspur. The club has had two months to name a manager considering that Jose Mourinho was sacked – mind you, at a time when the team was to play a cup final in less than a week.
Gattuso is a strange choice as well, even though he did win a Coppa Italia during his time at Napoli. The entire situation has gotten very messy. Hopefully, things get sorted soon before the club becomes a laughing stock, if not already.
