Tottenham target Nicolas Gonzalez set for £25m Brighton transfer

According to The Guardian, Tottenham are set to miss out on the signing of VfB Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez, with the Argentine forward set for a transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Gonzalez has been with Stuttgart for three years now and has seen the lows of relegation in his first season to the highs of promotion in his second. Indeed, after a slow start to life in Germany in 2018/19, when his team were relegated from Bundesliga, he played a key role to help them return to the top flight in 2019/20.

And upon arrival in the top tier, Gonzalez made a solid start to the campaign before an injury ended his season. Prior to getting sidelined, the 23-year-old produced a handy tally of six goals and two assists in 15 league matches.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Fiorentina had been interested in the Argentine international for a while now before Tottenham joined the race for his signing, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano last week.

Fiorentina, though, it emerged had dropped out of the race and decided to switch their focus to Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes instead. (h/t Football.london)

However, Tottenham have failed to capitalise on that as it is Brighton who are now set to land the Argentine winger. The report states that the Seagulls have agreed a club-record £25m deal to land Gonzalez, with a deal set to be completed imminently.

Given that Tottenham have lost both Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius upon completion of their loan deals, someone like Gonzalez, who can play through the middle or on the wings would have been a fine addition. However, it seems like Tottenham will have to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements now that the Argentine is set for Brighton.
