Transfer News: Tottenham and Chelsea set to battle for Leonardo Spinazzola
According to the Express, Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle it out with London rivals Chelsea for the signing of AS Roma left-back Leonardo Spinazzola this summer.
Spinazzola came through the ranks at Siena before making the switch to Juventus’s youth setup in 2010. During his time with the Turin giants, the 28-year-old had a number of loan spells away from the club, having played at Empoli, Virtus Lanciano, Siena, Atalanta BC, Vicenza and Perugia.
Having made just 12 senior appearances for Juventus, he left the club permanently for AS Roma in the summer of 2019. Since signing for the Giallorossi he has been a regular, featuring 71 times in which he has scored four times and set up 11 more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
After a solid season at Roma, Spinazzola is bossing at the UEFA Euro 2020. The left-back was the Man of the Match in the Azzurri’s 3-0 win over Turkey in the opening game. He then starred again as Italy beat Switzerland 3-0 on Wednesday. All this has led to interest from Tottenham and Chelsea. (h/t Express)
The interest from Tottenham seemed to have stemmed from the supposed arrival of Paulo Fonseca as the manager of the club. The Portuguese had managed Spinazzola for two years at Roma. (h/t Express)
However, such a move can be ruled out now that the 48-year-old will not be taking over at Tottenham, after talks with the club broke down. (h/t The Athletic)

Even if he did, a move would have made little sense given that Spurs already have Ben Davies and Sergio Reguilon as options at left-back. In addition, Ryan Sessegnon is also returning from his loan spell at TSG Hoffenheim as well.
