Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur looking at Atletico Madrid star Mario Hermoso
According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur are studying Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso as a potential option to bolster their defence.
Hermoso came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid but never managed a single first-team appearance. After a loan stint with Real Valladolid, the defender left for Espanyol in 2017 where he rose to prominence. Having spent two years with the club, the 26-year-old signed for Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019.
Since arriving at Wanda Metropolitano, Hermoso has made 61 appearances in which he has scored two goals and set up one more. The 26-year-old was a regular fixture in the side this past season, as Atletico Madrid went on to lift the La Liga title.
Hermoso, who has been capped five times by the Spanish national team, has now registered on the radars of Tottenham Hotspur, as per the aforementioned report.
Tottenham head into the campaign knowing that defensive reinforcements are a must. Toby Alderweireld is not getting any younger whereas both Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have flattered to deceive.
Joe Rodon does offer some hope after his impressive performances with the Welsh national team in the ongoing UEFA Euro 2020. But, fresh blood is certainly needed as Spurs look to recover from a poor campaign.

Hermoso, to that end, can be a handy addition. At 26, he has his best years ahead of him and has experience at the highest level. However, his contract with Atletico Madrid runs till 2024. I
n addition to that, Tottenham are yet to name a new manager, so that could change the club’s transfer approach based on who takes over the reins.
