Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur look to compete with Chelsea for Miralem Pjanic of Barcelona
According to a report by Diario Sport via Sport Witness (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur Director of Football, Fabio Paritici, wants to compete with Chelsea for Barcelona midfielder, Miralem Pjanic.
Paratici was appointed in his new role at N17 just last month. And the ex-Juventus man would not be alien to Pjanic, who spent a little over 4 years in Turin before the Catalan club came calling in 2020.
The report goes on to mention that Spurs have ‘made an approach’ for the former AS Roma man. Pjanic’s experience at top clubs like Lyon, Roma, Juventus, and Barcelona could be useful for Spurs.
Nuno Espirito Santo, the new Spurs boss, should look to solidify the team ahead of next season. With Harry Winks being monitored by Aston Villa, as per The Telegraph (Subscription Required), maybe it is time for Spurs to get in some new faces in midfield.
Pjanic could suit Tottenham
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was immense in his debut season at Spurs. The Danish midfielder has carried that form to Euro 2020 with Denmark and would surely be a regular in the Spurs XI next season as well.
Pjanic could be a very able partner for Hojbjerg in the middle of the park but that is if Spurs’ interest in the Bosnian is serious and they go on to formalize it with an offer.
While Santo’s main concern would be to hold on to his star names ahead of their next campaign, the importance of new signings cannot be undermined when it comes to adding depth and quality to the squad.

According to ESPN (h/t The Daily Star), Barcelona are looking to offload some players this summer to generate funds. If that is to be believed, then signing Pjanic would perhaps not be the most difficult task in the world for Paratici and co.
