Transfer News: Tottenham among clubs keen on signing Matthew Hoppe

According to transfer news from the Shields Gazette, Tottenham Hotspur are among a host of clubs keen on signing USMNT forward Matthew Hoppe from German club FC Schalke.

The 20-year-old Hoppe moved to FC Schalke in the summer of 2019 and had a breakthrough season at the struggling German club in 2020/21. In 22 league appearances in the season gone by, the striker has managed six goals and an assist, alerting clubs across England about his potential. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Hoppe has been called up to the United States’ Men’s National Team but he is yet to make his debut in international football. Nonetheless, his potential has caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur as per the aforementioned report, along with several other Premier League clubs including Southampton, Wolves and Newcastle United.

Tottenham are in need of a new centre-forward to cover for star man Harry Kane, who himself is staring at an uncertain future at the club. With Carlos Vinicius’ loan deal expiring, Tottenham do not have any cover for the 27-year-old England captain heading into the new season, with the Irish Independent recently claiming that Troy Parrott could be loaned out yet again this season.

Hoppe, to that end, would be a good signing for Spurs, considering that he has shown a lot of potential in a short span of senior football. In addition, considering his age, the 20-year-old would understand being an understudy to Kane rather than a starter from the get-go.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

It remains to be seen if Tottenham do formalise their interest in young Hoppe this summer. With Schalke getting relegated to the 2.Bundesliga they may be under pressure to sell as well. Something the club could look to capitalise on.
