Tottenham, Man United to battle for Cristian Romero

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t IBTimes), Tottenham Hotspur look set to battle it out with Premier League rivals Manchester United for the transfer of Atalanta’s Cristian Romero.

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Argentine club Belgrano and moved to Italy in January 2018, when he signed for Genoa. Just eighteen months into his spell, Romero was signed by Juventus, who immediately loaned him back to Genoa for the 2019/20 campaign, where he impressed again.

The last summer saw Romero sign for Atalanta on a two-year loan deal till 2022, with La Dea retaining the option of making the transfer permanent. He was once again very impressive, helping Gian Piero Gasperini’s side to a top-four finish. Now, he also did well in the Copa America 2021, playing a part in Argentina’s triumph after 28 years.

Romero’s exploits over the past few seasons have now led to interest in his services from both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs have been in the market for defensive reinforcements, considering that Toby Alderweireld could be on the move this summre while the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have not been consistent enough.

Joe Rodon is certainly an option, especially after he did well in the Euros with Wales. But adding another defender becomes key for Nuno Espirito Santo, who is known to build solid teams. So, Romero is an ideal target for Spurs, ahead of the next season.

However, the interest from Manchester United, coupled with his $72 million valuation, means that a deal could be difficult to pull off for Tottenham. Investing that one much on as single defender when there are other positions needed to be strengthened as well might not be prudent.
