Tottenham pursuit of Jules Kounde not progressing claims Fabrizio Romano

According to reputed journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur have not made any progress in their pursuit of Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.

Kounde came through the ranks at French club Bordeaux and made the switch to Sevilla in 2019. The 22-year-old was one of the Spanish outfit’s best players in his debut season as they went on to win the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League. He followed it up with yet another strong campaign in 2020/21 earning himself a call-up to the French national team for the Euro 2020.

In fact reputed journalist Gianluca Di Marzio even claimed that Tottenham had reached an agreement with Sevilla over a deal worth €30m, plus Davinson Sanchez. However, Romano has quickly dismissed any such notions, insisting that there has been very little progress made on that front even though Tottenham and Sevilla share an excellent relationship.

The Italian journalist adds that Sevilla remain open to letting Kounde leave for a big offer but a deal with Tottenham is not progressing, leaving little optimism over a successful transfer. He also mentions that the defender himself is waiting for a better offer.

In addition to that, a report from Spanish newspaper MARCA (h/t The Irish Sun) also seems to corroborate Romano’s claims, stating that Kounde has turned his back on any offers from Tottenham.

So, that may be that as far as Tottenham’s aspirations of signing Kounde are considered. A top young player with plenty of promise and potential, the 22-year-old would have been a good signing for Spurs. But considering that clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea among others, who can offer Champions League football, also in the fray, a deal was always going to be difficult.
