Transfer News: Tottenham will have to pay €60m to sign Joao Palhinha
According to transfer news from Portuguese publication Record (h/t Football.london), Tottenham have learnt that they will need to shell out €60m to sign Joao Palhinha from Sporting CP.
Having started out at the academy of Sacavenense, the midfielder made his way to Sporting’s youth setup in 2013 and has steadily risen through the ranks to become a mainstay in the first-team over the past year, after loan spells at Moreirense, Belenenses and Sporting Braga.
To date, Palhinha has featured 56 times for Sporting CP, bagging four goals in the process. The 26-year-old was an ever-present in the side that went on to lift the Primeira Liga last season. And his progress with Braga and Sporting over the past three years have earned him admirers in the form of Tottenham.
Spurs have a new head coach in place, with Nuno Espirito Santo taking over the reins of the club. The 47-year-old showed a great affinity towards building his team around a core of Portuguese players during his time as the Wolves boss. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see Tottenham get linked to players based in Portugal.
Palhinha, 26, is a top defensive midfielder who has his best years in front of him. However, he still has four years on his contract with the club, that also includes a release clause worth €60m. And Sporting have informed Tottenham that they will need to trigger that clause if the club want to sign him this summer.

It is unlikely that Tottenham would be willing to splash that much money on the 26-year-old. But, if Nuno is indeed keen on bringing the Portuguese star into the side, an approach could very well be made.
