Tottenham Hotspur ready to offer Davinson Sanchez in exchange for Cristian Romero
According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur are proposing a swap deal that will see Davinson Sanchez move to Atalanta in a bid to land Cristian Romero.
The 23-year-old, last season’s Serie A defender of the year is hot property after impressing on loan at Atalanta. Currently, on loan from Juventus, Atalanta are expected to sign him permanently before flipping him for a profit this summer.
Spurs are in need of a defender and could do with a player in Romero’s mould. Just 23, the Argentine international is developing well and has what it takes to be a top-level defender. Given our lack of dependable options at the back, he could emerge as a rock at the back for Nuno Espirito Santo for years to come.
The same cannot be said of Sanchez who has struggled to meet the required level at the club. The Colombian international arrived at Spurs to much fanfare and has had his moments. However, he has failed to push on and is more of a liability rather than an asset at this point in time.
According to the report, Tottenham are open to offers for the 25-year-old this summer and could use him as a makeweight in return for Romero. Sanchez’s agent Nestor Villarreal also represents Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata and has contacts with the Italian club. This could work in our favour if such a swap is on the cards.
While there have been stretches where he has been top-notch, Sanchez has often shown that he is prone to errors. He has so far made 149 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and making an assist.
With money at a premium, it would appear that swap deals/ part exchanges is being a source of modus operandi for us this summer. Spurs have already agreed to include Erik Lamela in part exchange for Sevilla starlet Bryan Gil. The deal is expected to be completed in the days to come.

Much was expected of Sanchez when Tottenham paid a then club-record fee to sign him from Ajax in 2017. It is fair to say that he has been more of a miss than a hit since. With Nuno Espirito Santo and Fabio Paratici at the helm, the club is now looking for a fresh start and from the looks of it, Sanchez will not be among those in their plans.
